With ever increasing frequency, I get asked all the time how you go about creating a Facebook Fanpage that is separate from a personal profile page.

I too was worried about keeping my business and personal accounts separate. So much so that at one point in time, I created two personal profiles. My personal one to keep in touch with family and friends, and a business profile that I could use for creating fanpages for Baldydog and our clients.

However, having multiple personal profiles goes against Facebook’s rules, so if you invest a ton of time in one or both of your profiles, you could possibly loose not only your Facebook profiles, but your Fanpages as well.

Keeping Fanpages and Personal Profiles Separate

1. When you set up your Fanpage, you can adjust your settings so when you post or comment on your Fanpage, you do it as the Fanpage.  For example, when I am on the Baldydog Fanpage, and I leave a comment, it will appear as if Baldydog left the comment not Adam Donkus.

2. When you want to use Facebook as your Fanpage, go to the top right corner of your profile page, next to Using Facebook As Page“HOME” is a little triangle that is pointing down..(see pic) click that and then from the drop down menu click on “Use Facebook  as Page” and then select the desired fanpage.

Using Facebook as a Fanpage instead of a person,  is a great way of getting your Fanpage out their.

Correcting Mistakes

If you make the mistake of liking a page, while you are using as a fanpage but meant to only do like as your profile, and the page then will show up under the “Likes” section on the sidebar. You and your visit

unlike fanpage

ors can both see the pages you have liked, and visit them. If  you did not mean to like a page as your fanpage, you can visit the page, and click unlike towards the bottom of the sidebar of the liked fanpage.

Delete Comments and Posts

If you or someone you know makes a comment or a post that you want to delete, how can you delete it?

Hover your cursor to the top right corner of the box the comment is in and an X will appear. If a guest makes a post and you don’t want it to be visible,

delete comment

you can hover your cursor over the top right of the post box and a menu will appear. You can either delete the post or hide it.

I was also asked about hiding the administrators box in the left sidebar. This box is only visible to administrators, so fear not. The general public will not be able to tell who the administrators are unless you tell them.

Why have my Fanpage associated with My personal profile?

A Fanpage must be associated(administrator) with someone, and I personally think it is a good idea to have multiple administrators, because if one personal profile gets deleted by the person or by Facebook, the Fanpage will still have at least one administrator, so it will not also disappear.

Fanpage Administrators have the ability to import contacts for easy sharing. Most businesses/organizations have a client list or email list which can be shared. A person rather than a Fanpage needs to do the  sharing, as Fanpages are much more limited as to who sharing can be done. When sharing info as when logged in and using Facebook with a Personal profile, you have the ability to determine who and who you don’t want to share.

Additionally, if you still want to insure your privacy even more, be sure to edit the privacy settings on your personal account so that your updates are only visible to friends and family. Check out Kikolani’s post for more Facebook Profile Privacy tips.

I have a facebook profile I set up for work, that has minimal info on it with an alias so it didn’t mix with my personal page. I have a business page within that profile. I’d like to convert it over to a business page with several administrators, but save all the posts and also, I purchased an app for the business that needs to move over also. Any ideas? Is there a simple way to delete the profile but keep the business page? Thank you!

Pam, you can add another admin to the Fanpage, and then delete the profile. But when you do you will also have to assign other profiles to be admins for any apps that you might have made or acted as the developer. You can also choose to unpublish and not delete so if there are negative consequences you can always reactivate the profile. You might also want to download the database for the profile so you can save all the posts.
